Wigan Council, in partnership with development partner Cityheart and contractor Galliford Try, is set to deliver one of Manchester’s most ambitious regeneration projects, Fettlers, a bold new neighbourhood in the heart of Wigan. Our Studio are pleased to have produced the CGIs to help bring this vision to life.

The £135 million scheme will feature a 70,000 sq ft market hall and food court, combining traditional market traders with modern offerings such as a bakery, coffee shops, bars, and a vibrant food hall. Future phases will introduce a 144-bed Hampton by Hilton hotel, a pavilion building, and a cinema and leisure complex. The development will also deliver more than 400 new homes across several residential buildings.

The project name, Fettlers, is inspired by Wigan’s industrial heritage, 'Fettling’ meaning to fix, mend, and improve, reflecting the spirit of the regeneration.

The design, led by Sheilabird in collaboration with JM Architects, Wigan Council, Cityheart, and operators Northern Lights Group (NLG)/PlaceCo, combines tradition and innovation. The vision includes market stalls, retail and hospitality spaces, creative workshops, winter gardens, and a lively food hall. Outside, the newly created Woodcock Square will serve as a vibrant public space for markets, community events, and daily activity, helping to re-energise the town centre.

The new market hall is set to open in late 2026, with the existing facility remaining operational until the transition is complete.
